Most of our customers decide to install solar panels so they can save money on their power bill. But they almost always ask one question first:

“Do I qualify for solar panels?”

Virtually any homeowner can have solar panels installed—as long as the homeowner hires a reputable contractor and follows the permitting process. At RC Energy Solutions, we handle the engineering, site design, technical planning, and permitting process for you.

Some customers have heard that their roof needs to be facing a certain direction in order to qualify for solar panels. We’ll assess your site and come up with the ideal placement for your panels. Because we customize each solar panel solution for your needs, we’re not limited to just one approach. We can almost always find a way to install the panels, even on the most challenging sites.

Often, customers with questions about qualification are really asking:

“Do I qualify for solar panel financing?”

And if you’re a homeowner with at least 10 percent equity in your home, the answer to that question is almost always yes.

Do I Qualify for Solar Panels with PACE?

As we discussed in a previous post, most homeowners are eligible for PACE financing. To put it simply, PACE is a government program that allows homeowners to finance qualifying energy-efficient home improvements through an assessment on their property tax bill.

With PACE, there’s no credit check required, and you don’t need to put any money down. As long as you have at least 10 percent equity in your home, you’re current on your mortgage payments, and you don’t have a recent bankruptcy on your record, you’re likely to qualify.

If you haven’t heard of PACE financing, don’t worry. It goes by different names. In the San Diego area, the two best-known PACE providers are the HERO Program and YgreneWorks. California First also has some market share. We’re proud to be a certified contractor with all PACE providers.

If you aren’t able to qualify for PACE financing, there are other financing options. Some credit unions offer loans for solar panel projects. We also work with EnerBank USA, which offers a combo loan with some of the lowest payments possible.

Do I Qualify for Solar Panel Rebates?

At one time, the California Solar Initiative offered cash-back rebates for SDG&E customers who installed solar panels. Solar proved to be very popular, so unfortunately, those rebates are no longer available.

Do I Qualify for Solar Panel Tax Credits?

Even though cash-back rebates are no longer available, there’s still a big incentive for installing solar panels—the Solar Investment Tax Credit of 30 percent. You can get a credit of 30 percent of the amount you paid for your solar panel system. So, if solar panels cost you $21,000, your tax credit would be $6,300.

Essentially, the government is thanking you for going solar by reducing the price of your solar panel system by 30 percent. You claim the credit on IRS Form 5695 at tax time.

The tax credit was set to expire in 2016, but it’s now been extended through 2019.
